This is in the oven right now… I used spelt flour instead of oat and I added some nutmeg and ginger.. Taking some to school tomorrow for breakfast alongside a green smoothie! It was the perfect color and texture on top, but the middle and bottom were still mushy. Do you know why this is? I followed the recipe given without any extra additions. Was your pan the same size? Different ovens, climates, ingredients will vary unfortunately, such as size of bananas, date number, etc. So sorry about that! I found that as well. I made it again with part buckwheat flour made my own with the oats in my Vitamix and cooked it an extra 20 minutes and it seems to be a bit better.

If you cut it into eighths, each slice will be cal. Dates are really expensive here so I was wondering if the recipe would still turn out if I used coconut sugar or maple syrup? These dates squares are a healthier take on traditional dates squares. These are a guaranteed holiday hit and if you thought date squares were boing and usually left behind on the dessert tray, these ones are sure to change your mind. Follow the same instructions for the dates and crust, except no need to blend oat flour. Make sure you let them cool in the pan before slicing. I think these will be perfect!

Dear Deryn, I made these bars yesterday and they did not hold together at all. Any ideas what what I could have done wrong? I used the exact measurements and let them cool down completely. And the dough tasted great….

Description These dates squares are a healthier take on traditional dates squares. Instructions Soak the pitted dates in hot water for 15 minutes. The water should be as hot as possible but no need to boil it. Pre-heat the oven to degrees. While those are soaking, prepare the crust and topping layers.

Let them processor for a while until they ressemble a very fine flour. Add all the crust ingredients to a bowl, including the oat flour, and mix it up.

Drain the dates and then use your hands to mash them into a paste. This is a bit messy so if you prefer, you can blend them. Evenly spread the date paste over the crust layer in the pan. Press the rest of the crumble on top of the date layer. Bake for 40 minutes then let them cool completely in the pan.
